The High Sierra Chapter holds dinner meetings, in the Fresno/Clovis area, on the third Thursday of most months during the Fall, Winter, and Spring. In April, we have a joint meeting with the Reedley College Chapter and Southern San Joaquin Chapter, at Reedley Community College.
In April, the SAF / USFS / NRCS Conservation Day takes place at Sierra High School in Tollhouse, CA. Several bus loads of 5th and 6th grade children from the foothill schools are brought in for a day of environmental education. The high school nature trail has several stations setup for many of the major disciplines in natural resource management. Resource professionals from the various disciplines staff the stops and others help lead the groups from one station to the next. The day is enjoyable and educational for all involved.
In May, we will be taking part in the "Science Day" event at Shaver Lake. This is an Edison sponsored, one day event. 350+ grade school students are bussed in with teachers and parents for a fun day of learning about the environment from resource professionals.
Annually the Cecil P. Metcalf Scholarship Award is given out to an outstanding student from Reedley College's, Forest Park Program. This prestigious award includes a check for the student. It is designed to honor their commitment to excellence and help the student make ends meet while attending classes. To pay for this scholarship and our other expenses, we have an annual fund-raiser. In the Fall turkeys are raffled off in a Turkey Shoot style system. The winners have their turkeys in time for Thanksgiving.
