"Forestry 101" For the Legislators ~2005~

Forestry 101 for State Legislators and Staff is co-sponsored by the California Licensed Foresters Association (CLFA) and the Northern California Society of American Foresters (Nor Cal SAF).

WHAT:  A short course on California forestry, designed to take only two hours of your valuable time.  Topics included basic information plus timely issues such as USDA Forest Service policy and the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan, forest fires and methods to reduce their destruction, Golden State wood production, consumption and imports, clearcutting, biodiversity, water quality, and much more!!!  Plenty of time was set aside for questions and discussion.

WHY?:  Forests and woodlands cover almost half of our Golden State . California 's professional foresterswant to ensure that elected officials make decisions affecting our renewable resources based upon sound science and the highest possible level of understanding.  WHY ME?  Let's face it - it's almost impossible to get busy Capitol folks out of the building and into the woods!!!  We've designed this short course with your hectic schedules in mind.  Forestry 101 will enhance your understanding of critical issues facing forest management and natural resource conservation in California .

The goal of Forestry 101 is to raise the awareness of the legislators and staff to the fact that professional foresters exist, that they are credible sources of information regarding forests and their management, and that they can be trusted with perhaps more decision-space, discretion for exercising professional

judgment in the management of California's forest resources.

Forestry 101 consisted of PowerPoint presentations of basic forest and forestry information, forest product production and consumption in California , the 2003 Forest Service's Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment (Framework) and how and why it was changed from the initial 2001 SNFPA, and a forestry student's perspective on forestry in California today and in the future.

Participants asked questions during the presentations and 30 minutes was reserved at the end for the 90 minutes of presentations for further questions and discussion.
