Sequoia National Monument Plan
The State Attorney General Lockyer has filed a lawsuit against the USDA Forest Service Giant Sequoia National Monument Plan. This is a great opportunity for NorCal SAF members to raise awareness of SAF policies on fuels and timber harvest and to further the goals of the 2005 National Strategic Plan and to educate the public about forest management issues. Please consider writing a letter to the editor of your local paper, an Op-Ed piece, or your state elected official. The Sequoia National Monument needs your help!!!
History of Issue
State Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed a lawsuit March 3, 2005 against the USDA Forest Service Giant Sequoia National Monument Plan. This lawsuit attempts to eliminate the use of timber harvest as a reliable method to reduce fuel hazards. This is contrary to two positions adopted by the Society of American Foresters, 1) Timber Harvesting on Federal Lands: An Essential Tool for Sustainable Forest Management and 2) Policy on Wildfire Management. Therefore, this lawsuit does not ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.
